Probe :
2004-2018

I have been Artistic director of the dance theatre company, Probe, since 2004, and whilst I have not officially closed the company there has been an organic shift away from Probe and towards me as the central creator and protagonist of my work.

I conceived Probe as a way to progress artistic ideas formed through years of working as a dancer with different companies and choreographers and as a choreographer in my own right. The first two productions (Have we met somewhere before? & Magpie) were co-directed by myself and Theo Clinkard, coming together as a dynamic duo to curate, produce, commission and perform short duets or solos by internationally acclaimed choreographers, presented in new and intriguing mixed bill formats.

I then continued alone, shifting the focus to working collaboratively with artists from different art forms- choreographers, theatre directors, writers, song-writers, musicians, performers, etc.- to create work that dealt with one narrative or idea for the duration of a piece (May, Small Talk, Running on Empty).

I then changed focus again to embark upon writing, choreographing and directing my first full-length work for probe (Now You See It).

Producing six full length touring shows for Probe has given me vast experience in curating and commissioning evenings of work, directing dance theatre work with cross artform collaborative teams and managing every aspect of the production.  I now enjoy being able to take full ownership of my creative work alongside utilising my skills to help other companies and independent artists realise their own artistic endeavours.

Artistic Vision

At the heart of Probe’s work lies collaboration and finding new and interesting ways to integrate dance, text and music to communicate or tell a story.

My aim has been to put the collaborators at the forefront of the work, carefully tailoring an artistic team specific to each individual project. Probe was about combining different art forms whilst remaining rooted in physicality – discovering how these elements can exist together effectively in harmony and discord, generating fresh ideas and moving in new directions.

I have always been driven to create work that deals in both fantasy and reality, with characters that have all the difficulties of real people and tell stories about the complexity of human relationships. From a broader viewpoint I’m interested in how these impact the wider world and finding ways to unite stories of an intimate and epic nature so that they communicate in a way that is both personal and universal.
